Have we gone too far?

Dare I suggest that there may just be too many planes in the sky at any given moment?

Granted, I live 30 mins from Denver International Airport, but I think that's of little consequence as the same thing is going on overhead no matter where you are located in this country.

An even better picture that I would not be able to capture with my lowly camera is my view to the East at night.  I can see the lights of no less than 3 or 4 planes having just taken off, staggered like runners at the start of a track event, before they eventually disperse into the direction of their respective destinations.  Departures must be somewhere around 30 second to 1 minute intervals.  Sorry, but that's just a little crazy to my mind.  Can't y'all just write a letter to Aunt Betsy instead of visiting her 3 times a year?  At any rate, I wouldn't venture into that Bermuda Triangle - hard telling what's waiting on the other side.

Blood Moon

I hadn't planned on staying up to watch the lunar eclipse.  It wasn't going to happen until around 12:30-1am and I value a decent night's sleep way too much these days.  It trumps just about everything else.  But the girls have been getting a lot better at sleeping through the night, so I figured the occasional exception could now be made.  I really miss those old days of setting the alarm clock for 3am to go out and watch a meteor shower, it's been years.  So stay up I would.  Still, I almost didn't make it.  Around 12:25 I was going to throw in the towel (man, I'm sounding old), but I poked my head out the door and could see just a sliver of darkness making it's way across the edge of the moon.  That got me sufficiently excited, so now I had to see it.  I realized that this was a photo worthy event and at the same time that the camera on my phone wasn't going to be up to the task.  I ran up to grab my old HP Photosmart 945.  It's a ~10 year old digitial camera that somehow still takes some pretty great shots.  I figured the battery would be, at best, nearly dead because I hadn't used it in 6+ months.  And it was.  But only nearly!...I was able to snap off a few shots before it shut itself off.  I hurried to get it in the charging cradle and hoped it would be ready again in time for the main event.  And it was!  So here's a few of my no-tripod, shaky hand, ancient digital camera shots - some of which, actually - not too shabby!

Took this with the cell phone.  Couldn't see any of the eclipse detail, but it turned out looking like the cover of a Carl Sagan book.
The rest are with the HP camera.  I love the transposed reflection that shows up here.

Starting to take on that reddish hue.

Tried taking some with the flash.
Stay Puft Marshmallow Man?
Fully eclipsed!  1:05am.  Time for bed.

My Babies

No, not those adorable pig-tailed babies - though I'm sure they'll show up on here eventually!   This time I had to show off my precious little seedlings.  Don't you just wanna nuzzle all up in them?  Ok, maybe that's just my sick fantasy.  But they seem to like it.

This was my first year starting my own seedlings and so far I'm quite pleased with the results.  Re-purposed this old rack I found in the basement whose previous life involved housing a menagerie of dust creatures and coincidentally, mason jars of old seeds.   Back in February, the warped rusting shelves that I covered in that stunning faux granite contact paper were first graced with Gold Princess and Bianca Di Maggio onions.  They went in the ground last week after a stint in the cold frame.  The rest of the gang is made up of tomatoes (Roma, Amish Paste, Black Krim, German Pink and Pearly Pink), peppers (Pepperoncini and Filius Blue), Russian Red Kale, Morris Heading Collards, Sage and Oregano.

Bottom Shelf.

Top Shelf - Just enough room with those fancy cardboard box extenders, which also make it quite handy to move them in bulk for watering.

Several varieties of tomatoes.

The Kale/Collards money shot...yes, they are quite sexy.

I'm hardening off the Kale and Collards now and they should be going in the ground this weekend.  The rest will have to wait until The Old Farmer's Almanac moon-favorable dates of May 7-14.  Here's to naked moonlit vegetable planting!  Wait, is that just me too?
